What are anti wrinkle injections?
Anti wrinkle injections consist of a purified protein produced by a bacteria. There are three brands available in Australia.
How do anti wrinkle injections work?
Anti wrinkle injections block the nerve impulses to the muscle treated preventing the muscle from contracting. The overlying wrinkle is then softened or eliminated as the muscle underneath is relaxed. Only small amounts are injected so that you can target specific areas without affecting surrounding areas. When anti wrinkle injections are used properly, spread from the site of injection is very limited.
Areas that can be treated include:
- Crows feet
- Frown area
- Eye Brow lift
- Nose scrunch
- Neck bands
- Mouth area
- Lip lines
Other areas in the lower face can be treated as well.
There are over 100 medical uses for these injections including, excessive sweating, children with cerebral palsy who have spasticity, stroke victims, anal fissures, etc. Much larger doses are usually required for medical treatments than used in Cosmetic anti wrinkle treatments.
An extremely successful use is in Hyperhidrosis – Excessive Sweating
Long Term Use
This product has been used for well over 20 years. Any potential side effect is almost always temporary. Much larger doses of anti wrinkle injections than is used in cosmetic uses are used in children with cerebral palsy as young as 2 years old.
The procedure only takes a few minutes. Most people have this performed in their lunch break and go straight back to work afterwards. A small amount is injected under the skin or into the muscle. It doesn’t require anaesthetic as it is very tolerable. Ice can be used. Over the next few days the muscles gradually relax. You can still maintain facial expression however the wrinkles in the treated area soften or disappear.
Following the Procedure
It begins to take effect 2-3 days following the procedure and works fully by 1-2 weeks. It usually lasts 3-6 months.
There are a few possible side effects however they do not happen very often. Bruising and tenderness at the injection site may occur however this normally resolves after a week. A headache may occur for a few days after the procedure. A mild painkiller may be taken if this occurs to relieve the headache. Minor temporary droop of one eyelid can occur when treating the frown lines. This is not common and disappears in days to weeks. There is an eye drop that can be used to sometimes reverse this until the eyelid returns to normal. Very rarely there can be an allergic reaction or a flu like illness.
It should not be used in pregnancy or in people with certain neuromuscular disorders.
